Toulouse, a must for learning French and exploring France

Learn French in Toulouse, France

Toulouse is ideally situated in the heart of Southern France, in the Midi region. It is 590 km from Paris and half-way between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea.

The city lies on the banks of the River Garonne, the site of an ancient Roman settlement. Even today many of the smaller streets in Toulouse follow their Roman counterparts and many of the red brick buildings are of a pseudo-Roman style. This distinctive brick architecture gives Toulouse its nickname «la ville rose». Reflections of golden light on the bricks make for a very special colouring, which confers the city a gentle and warm atmosphere.

Toulouse is bubbling over with life, mixing heritage and lifestyle, cultural events and festivals. All over the city, the ambience is friendly, typical of the people of Southern France. Toulouse is not a very big city, so you can walk to most destinations in the inner city quite comfortably.

Toulouse, France

In the middle ages, Toulouse was one of the richest cities of France due to the sale of blue colouring (pastel) extracted from woad plants. Its 2000-year-old history has left Toulouse scattered with a first-rate heritage that is representative of the Southern French style at various moments in history.

The Saint-Sernin basilica, a jewel of 11th and 12th century Roman art, is an important stage on the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrimage. At the heart of the antique dealer’s quarter, the Saint Etienne cathedral bears witness to the evolution of several styles of sacred architecture. The city is also very rich in Renaissance townhouses: hôtel de Bernuy, hôtel d’Assézat, hôtel de Pierre… Not to forget the Capitole, currently the City Hall. 19th century industrial buildings renovated as cultural venues prolong the tradition of brick – such as the Galerie du Château d’Eau, the Musée des Abattoirs or the Bazacle – a permanent exhibition space on the banks of the Garonne. The Canal du Midi or Canal des Deux Mers is a 240 km, which connects the Garonne River to the Étang de Thau on the Mediterranean, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Toulouse’s world renowned university is one of the oldest in Europe (founded in 1229) and is the third-largest university campus of France after Paris and Lyon. It is the seat of the Académie des Jeux Floraux, the equivalent of the French Academy for the Occitan-speaking regions of southern France, making Toulouse the unofficial capital of Occitan culture.

Toulouse, France - Gastronomic Specialties

The city's gastronomic specialties include Saucisses de Toulouse, a type of herb sausage, cassoulet Toulousain, a bean and porkstew, and garbure, a cabbage soup with poultry. Also, foie gras, the liver of an overfed duck or goose, is a delicacy mainly made in the Midi-Pyrénées. These delicacies may be found at the open-air and covered markets.

Furthermore, Toulouse has become a centre of aviation and spaceflight in the past 20 years, and today it is the home base of the European aerospace industry, with the headquarters of Airbus, Galileo positioning system, the SPOT satellite system, and CNES's Toulouse Space Centre (CST), the largest space centre in Europe.
