Bremen, ideal for combining holidays with language learning!
Bremen is a favourite spot for combining holidays with language learning for many reasons:
- The German language is spoken in its purest form.
- A unique blend of Hanseatic tradition and modern development is enjoyed.
- Its friendly and familiar atmosphere makes you feel at home, and it helps you make friends easily.
- There is plenty to be done and seen in Bremen!
A myriad of parks, squares, pubs, bars, historical sites and cultural hubs will make any amount of time you spend in Bremen not enough! Bremen’s closeness to the sea also makes it an ideal start base for trips to the North Sea islands, to Hamburg, Lübeck, or the Luneberg Moors.
Many of the sights in Bremen are found in the Altstadt (Old Town). The oldest part of the Altstadt is the southeast half, starting with the Marktplatz (Market square), which is dominated by the opulent façade of the Town Hall. Two statues stand to the west side of the Town Hall: one is the statue of the city's protector, Roland, and the other is Die Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians) which portrays the donkey, dog, cat and rooster of the Grimm Brothers' fairy tale.
Other highlights of the Old Town include the Cathedral St. Petri, the ornate Renaissance façade of the Schütting and Stadtwaage buildings, the inspired mixture of Gothic and Art Nouveau of the Böttcherstraße, the cafés, artisan shops and art galleries of the Schnoor, and Schlachte, the medieval harbour.
More contemporary attractions include the modern science museum (Universum Science Center), the nature museum (Botanika), the botanical garden (Rhododendron-Park Bremen), the art museum (Kunsthalle Bremen), and the People of Bremen's Museum for Art and Cultural History (Focke Museum). You can also go beer tasting at Beck’s Brewery.
The Bremen Freimarkt
From 16th October to 1st November an enormous funfair, non-stop live music, dancing, drinking, street entertainment and general merrymaking will set the scene for the Bremen Freimarkt. This two-week fair and folk festival, held annually on and around Bremen’s historic squares, has more than 950 years of tradition and is locally known as the "fifth season".
A full programme of events builds up to the festival highlight, the Freimarktsumzug parade, where decorated floats stream through central Bremen's streets.
For full details of the programme, please visit the Bremen Freimarkt website.
