Learn German in the relaxing yet exiting vibe of Bielefeld!
Bielefeld, located on both the western and eastern slopes of the Teutoburg Forest, is a cultural and economic centre of Eastern Westphalia, and one of the major twenty cities in Germany. Its excellent infrastructure and central location puts it within easy reach of all parts of Europe. The centre of Bielefeld is situated on the eastern side of the Teutoburg Forest, but the modern city incorporates boroughs on the opposite side and on the hilltops.
Bielefeld combines the advantages of a city with both exciting and relaxing leisure opportunities, an excellent traffic network, a variety of restaurants and pubs, and the charm of a university town, which renders it an attractive language travel destination.
The main highlight of the Bielefeld events calendar this summer is the Sparrenburg Festival with its medieval market in July. Also, a total of 11 museums present a rich year-round program of permanent and special exhibitions, and a high standard theatre production is also offered. The Rudolf-Oetker concert hall with its outstanding acoustics has an excellent reputation among connoisseurs of classical music, and international concerts are staged in the civic hall Stadthalle, the Seidensticker hall and at the Ravensberg Park.
Interesting historical heritage features can be found throughout Bielefeld, alongside generous greenbelts and modern architecture. Almost five thousand hectares of forest with about six hundred kilometres of walking trails provide an attractive frame around the town.
This July do not miss the Sparrenburg Festival with its Medieval Market!
Every year in July, the Sparrenburg Castle brings back the history and culture of the late Middle Ages during the three-day spectacular medieval festival. A clamorous and colourful crowd of magicians, storytellers, traders, hawkers, peddlers, craftsmen and more bring to life the times of preachers selling indulgences, of minstrels and the Black Death, and of wanton high spirits.
For three days this July, from 24th to 26th, enjoy the knightly tournaments and medieval plays with music at the Sparrenburg Castle.
The Sparrenburg Castle was built between 1240 and 1250 by the Counts of Ravensberg, and it is Bielefeld's oldest and most famous landmark. It stands on a hillside in the Teutoburg Forest and in earlier times it was used to watch over the city of Bielefeld and the Osning pass.
The castle resisted several sieges during its history, and it has been rebuilt many times. After extensive restoration work, the castle now presents itself as an imposing historic site. You may explore the well-preserved and vast system of underground rooms and passageways. You can also climb the tower to enjoy the magnificent views over the town and the surrounding countryside.
